Death toll from rainstorms battering southern China hits 70
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0WDP/is_2010_May_10//ai_n53529373/?tag=content;col1
Asia
Summary: Ferocious rainstorms pound on southern China since Wednesday May 5, 2010. As the death toll works its way to the 70s, Xinhua News Agency reports that 5 people that were previously listed as missing were found dead. Millions of people from areas like, Sichuan, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Hunan and Chongqing municipality are affected greatly from this downpour. They all dread the coming forecast of more storms. Approximately 2.55 million people have been affected so far and 9,900 houses have been toppled due to the storm. 5,884 of those 9,900 houses have been found in Jiangxi, an area 400 miles southwest of Shanghai. The raging storms have reportedly triggered flash floods, mud-rock flows, and other treacherous results. Will this weather never end?
Significance: Weather is something that everyone is at least a little afraid of. As the year 2012 draws closer, we humans have little choice but to cower and fear and wait for our demise. Weather has been preached about from the beginning of time, telling people when God is happy, sad, or angry. People see floods, tornadoes, and earthquakes as signs of the end of the world. These storms in China may start an epidemic of fear and turmoil throughout the world. This weather can also be damaging to crops, roadways, and bridges everywhere in China. Production of China’s goods may see a decline as people begin to not be able to come to work and actually produce. These storms can affect everything from a small business to the entire world.

Asia's economy ripples outward after a shook the stock market. In the United States, the economy is affecting the stock market. In result, the interest rates soared and caused currencies in Asia like the Korean won to weaken and have less.Ten companies world wide have planned to issue stock delayed offerings, which is the most in a single week. The increasing of all this has set global anxiety threatens to slow the recovery. In the United States, job growth is finally picking back up after the deepest recession since the Great Depression. To help fix this, they started a Chinese fund worth 5 billion ($730 million dollars). There are numbers of reasons as to why the equity is struggling to raise funds these days and this is part of it.

Starting on Wednesday, May 5, a destructive storm hit southern China. The toll from the storm climbed to 70. Provinces and the residents living in them have also been affected by the storm's path. This storm has also destroyed 9,900 houses. Including to the damage, the storm has also started flash floods, mud-rock flows, overfilled rivers, damaged highways and more.
This affects the world because China produces many goods in which they trade. You can look through a few objects in your own house, most likely it was made in China. With this destruction, production of some or many products will be slowed or stopped. Slowing trade, buying, and selling. Maybe even of some needed products. Also, China now has to fix the destruction, which costs money. So before starting business back up the money will be used to fix roads, bridges, houses and more. This could cause a long period of little trading with China which affects many countries throughout the world.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2010-05-12-china-students-killed_N.htm?csp=34
Recently there has been multiple attacks on kindergarten and elementary students in China. Since March, seventeen people have died from these attacks. At one incident seven children and two adults were killed and eleven were hurt at a kindergarten. Those who are attempting the murders are psychologically disturbed adults. China authorities state the media should stop reporting the incidents, so that other mentally disturbed adults do not try the same thing. Some have said the "bandwagon effect" is occurring. Many articles have been removed by authorities in a effort to stop the attacks.
Adults are becoming afraid to send their children to school because of the attacks. With so many deaths and people hurt, it is hard for parents to feel assured that their child is safe when they send them off to school. These attacks could have been prevented if there was more security and protection at the schools. After the attacks, China authorities should make a huge effort in making schools a safer place for the students. The murder of these innocent children and adults is upsetting, especially since it could have been prevented. Hopefully, enough precautions will be taken so there will be no more attacks like these in China.

Outspoken Thai general shot, in critical condition
http://www.asianewsnet.net/home/news.php?sec=1
Today, a Thai leader, Lt. General Khattiya Sawasdipol was shot. He is now suffering a serious wound at the bottom of his head. Reports have said that he was shot at an intersection while he was giving an interview to a Japanese reporter. Reporters that were near the incident said that they heard bomb-like explosions and gun shots. Approximately twenty other people were hurt from the explosion also and were sent to a hospital close by.
This article is significant in a few ways. A Thai general was shot while he was giving a report to a Japanese reporter. He wasn’t doing anything bad so it was like he was shot for no reason, and is now in critical condition. Also, other innocent people were hurt. But the good thing is that there are no reported deaths. There were also bomb-like explosion sounds, so that could have also injured many more people.

This article is significant because it talks about bond risk falls and credit-default swap prices. The cost of protecting Asia-Pacific bonds fell, according to traders of credit default swaps.Credit-default swap indexes are benchmarks for protecting bonds against default and traders use them to speculate on credit quality. An increase suggests deteriorating perceptions of credit quality and a drop shows improvement.
This article i significant becuase it explains about bong risk fall and credit default wap prices.Thi article is also ignificant because it explains how the swap contracts pay the buyer face value in exchange for the underlying securities if a borrower fails to meet their debt aggreements. This is why this article is significant.

China Races to Secure Middle East Oil Deals
http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/wealthofnations/archive/2010/05/13
In the article China Races to Secure Middle East Oil Deals, it claims that China is working to secure Middle East oil deals. China is now the biggest importer of Saudi oil, the second biggest of Iranian oil, and the largest player in the Iraqi oil game. China is working very hard and putting in a lot of money on trying to have ownership of the oil fields. China is trying to have ownership of the oil fields to better guarantee their supply of oil than on buying oil in the open market. China has made many big billion dollar deals to develop oil fields in Iraq. China is making risks that the United States and other countries are not willing to take, by placing their nationals in war zones.
This article is significant to the world because China is increasing its ties to Iran as many Western countries oil firms are pulling out. China is now Iran’s biggest economic partner. China has more than 21 billion dollars in annual trade. The United States and other Western countries have sanctions on Iran. China is reluctant to follow these sanctions. According to the article China said it is willing to back up its interests with firepower. This of course would affect the United States as well as other Western countries if this occurred. The United States is trying to work with other countries to have those in China wean off its demand of Iranian oil.

In Asia yesterday, just like the united states, their economy is lowering and they are going more deeper into debt. After many reports of surrounding countries school districts cutting out activities and lowering their budgets, the US dollar, and other currency used around the world has been lowered and it is not turing out good. This could cause a derail in global recovery.
The significance to this is that just like the united states and several other countries, we are all in need of some extra money and need all the help we can get. Currency is changing, schools are being forced to cut out what students love most, and its all falling apart. Everyone is in debt.

ReplyDeletehttp://abcnews.go.com/International/south-korea-struck-online-suicide-pacts/story?id=10636608
In South Korea a new trend has evolved which is not benefiting anyone in the country. Within two days, nine suicides have been committed in three different situations. The most recent suicide was on May 13, 2010 and happened at a construction site in Hoengseong, Kangwon Province. A 72 year old man hung him self and left no note or reason behind him. On the other hand, the next two suicides were oddly similar. Both incidents involved a group of people and occurred the same way. The first group consisted of four women and one man in their twenties and thirties and occurred in the South side of Seoul. The group sealed themselves in a van with plastic sheets and inhaled toxic fumes. Unlike the first, they left notes quoting, “I have no more hope and no more dreams” and “please find my identification card in my back pocket.” The third group suicide was performed the same way as the second. Police believe theses events are being driven by online suicide pacts because peoples social, academic, and family pressure put a depression them. They also can be driven by the economic downturn.
This impacts the world in a major way. If you think about it, the internet is used all around and many sites such as myspace and facebook allow you to communicate with people from all over the world. If there are suicide groups and pacts being made, the idea could easily be spread. Through the click of a button, the group could turn up on facebook and turn up on every teen’s page in America or the world. There must be something in these groups convincing people to join the movement. Many people in America are looking for an escape to their own problems and if this reaches the U.S, it may lead to the same problem happening in South Korea.

In Singapore, Asia there are large cancer rates because of Western bad habits. This is from smoking, drinking, and eating unhealthy food. If you exercise, eat healthy food, and not use tobacco that's supposed to lessen your chance of cancer. More people from Asia are starting to move into cities and become obese from inactivity. They are also starting to smoke a lot more than before. This is what has been raising the cancer rates.
This is significant because the US has influenced a lot upon other countries. Now Asia is starting to have similar habits and this is bad. Their cancer rates are going up. It was predicted that if nothing changes a third of Chinese men under 30 will die from tobacco with lung cancer.

South Korea has stopped trade with North Korea because of a sunken warship. The ship mysteriously sunk on March 26. Of the 104 crew members, 60 are dead and 6 are believed to be dead, but still considered missing. Although North Korea is not believed to be the blame for the sunken warship, there is still suspicion.
This article is significant because it can cause a fight between North Korea and South Korea, which of course would be considered a civil war. Although that is unlikely, it also has stopped trade, which is significant as well. With less trade means less manufacturing. Less manufacturing means not as many sales, resulting in the economy worsening.

Summary: Asia passes Europe as a top export destination for the first time in history. This can impact the United States because of this. 227.6 billion of u.s. merchandise exports to Asia passes the 223.7 billion exports to europe. So if investors stop using the euro it will lose its value to the dollar which means people wont be as intereseted in using american goods.
ReplyDeleteSignificance- This current event has alot of affects on the United States. If this continues where greece and europe having an export and debt problem people will stop investing in the Euro. If investors stop doing that that affects the relation to the american dollar. So that means people in Europe wont be so interested in using American products. Which then will affect Americas financial problem evem more.

Cannibalism is when another human is interested in eating other humans, it’s a very serious matter and almost illegal everywhere. The Maori tribe is a tribe that has had cannibalism in its past, unfortunately a joke that the New Zealand leader had made towards this group struck some nerves. "The good news was that I was having dinner with Ngati Porou as opposed to their neighboring iwi, which is Tuhoe — in which case I would have been the dinner," This doesn’t help that the New Zealand leader needs to get on there good side. On Thursday he apologized if his joke had offended anyone.
In the 20th century everyone is sensitive towards others. In most cases if you are a public figure and you say anything negative towards another group that public figure will get back lash. The New Zealand leader has obviously struck some nerves and made people very angry with his comment about cannibalism. Although cannibalism is very much disturbing and a form of murder joking about it in public doesn’t seem like the smartest way to go. All around the world people will be affected by his comment and maybe even use his “joke” against him.

The clashes between anti-goverment protesters and riot police have been going on for a while now. althought things were intense, they are getting worse by the day. intense and ferice gun fire picked up in bangkok and dosent seem to be calming down. About 31 people haved died in all this. Through out the city theres fires burning and shots can be heard through out the city. This heated controversy dosent show signs of stopping soon.
This is significant because it is almost like a civil war. Its getting worse everyday, and shows no signs of stopping. Most likely the death toll will olny rise, and people will be using more advanced fighting tactics. This may destory the city and is not good for bangkok at all. The goverment needs to sort this out this problem as soon as possible.

Hedge funds are all going to Asia. Asia's assets of Asia are to raise 70% over the next two years. While Asia has good economic growth because of the funds, some Europe countries are in trouble.Scrutiny of hedge funds has heightened politicians in Germany and France and they blame the industry for the crisis.
The importance of this is it shows how somethings for countries can beneficial to countries and harmful to others. As the hedge funds go to Asia, its economy is flourishing while economies in Europe are in crisis.

Title- Pakistan blocks Facebook over Mohammed cartoon
Author- Waqar Hussain
Region- Asia
Source- yahoo.com (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100519/tc_afp/pakistaninternetfacebookislamreligioncourt)
Publication Date 5/19/10
Who would have ever thought that facebook would become a controversy with religion in certain places, but of course somehow it is. A group created on Facebook called, “Draw Mohammed Day” was exactly what the titles say it to be. People who became fans would put there own personal drawn photo of Mohammed on the website. It may not seem like a big deal, but considering Islam strictly prohibits the depiction of any prophet this will anger Muslims all over the world. Instead of getting rid of the group called, “Draw Mohammed Day” Pakistan is so outraged that they got rid of the website all together. It is said in this article About 20 people demonstrated outside court in the eastern city of Lahore, carrying banners condemning Facebook and praising Mohammed. This facebook ordeal has angered many people, no one knows what decision will be made by Pakistan to either keep facebook or not.
This article is definitely affective all over the world, Pakistan is outrage and the facebook owners haven’t commented on the situation at all. Pakistan has gotten rid of facebook all together because the group on facebook has insulted and angered many people. In the year 2008 a newspaper printed out a cartoon of the Prohphet Mohammed it was first published in Denmark. A suicide bomber not to long after the situation killed eight people and wounded 27 people to show the rebellion against the newspaper. If someone would kill 7 people and injure 27 people over a newspaper, no one knows what someone will do about the facebook group. Lets hope no one gets hurt because of this situation.

The Fine Print of Pru's Asia Pitch
The Prudential PLC is selling prospects for growth and support for $35.5 billion aquisition.China and India accounted 16% of Prudentials total sales. So China and India were responsible for Prudentials sales basically. So Prudential leaned towards growth in Hong Kong to double its earnings. They are trying to help cities expand their earnings. Points forecasts that Asia is in charge of a lot of global gross domestic product from 2008 to 2030. They are in charge of 47%. Prudential suggest that a new company would have a 29% market share with foreign insurers. That is good because foreign insurers have less than 5% of the Chinese market. The governments have tended to listen to foreign financial services. Eventually the governments will take control of foreign companies which will be good.
It affects Asia because it will take control of companies. Some companies will shut down because of they might not have enough earnings. It will help a little because some will become stronger.

Asia Current Event #2
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/asia-powers-up-its-nuclear-ambitions-2010-05-20?dist=countdown
Countries around the world have been looking to cut their dependence on the feuls we use today. Not only because of the thought of running out, but for pollution reasons to. Asia has started up and is aggressively progressing in the nuclear energy idea. Though it isnt new, it is seen as the energy of the future. Out of the 54 nuclear energy plants in the world, Asia has 36, and are constructing more. Asia is "on a very rapid expansionary course" for the future in nuclear energy. And in nuclear progression around the world, Asia is definetly ahead.
This affects the world in many ways. Other countries like the US are starting the nuclear energy progress again after seeing Asia's current success. In the US no new nuclear plants have been built in decades, that will change by 2018 due to Asia's actions. Now being seen as the energy of the future in a fast growing industry, other countries are lifting bans on the progression of nuclear energy. So now Asia being the new energy growth leader, other countries will jump in and there will be competition. But it will be difficult to catch up with Asia's progress.

Asia Current Event #2
Article: http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-05-20/asia-s-export-led-recovery-highlights-threat-of-europe-slowdown.html
After a downfall of Asia’s exports, Asia is now on the road to recovery. Asia’s new found growth is increasing. More cars, computers, and other technology are being shipped overseas at a rapid rate. This trading between Japan and other countries is said to be the reason for more than half of the 4.9% growth in its gross domestic products. The recovery also adds to Taiwan’s economy which grew 13.3% from last year. However, Asia’s recovery may need to slow down. Europe’s debt is hurting the recovering businesses in Asia. Sebastian Barbe has said, “We should expect a moderation in exports because of the negative impact from Europe and the currency appreciation against the euro can really affect sales.”
Asia’s economic and exporting growth affects many countries. Asia is constantly sending items to the United States and other countries. However, these countries’ economies are not as strong as they once were. So in return, these countries can not afford all of the items that Asia has been sending since their own personal recovery. Since these countries are not buying as much of Asia’s goods, Asia is forced to raise the prices to keep their businesses in good financial state. So while Asia’s economy and exports may be improving and growing, not much success can be a result of their growth because other countries’ economies are not as strong.

Japan is emerging as a surprising beneficiary of the global economic recovery, helped by its proximity to Asia's fast-growing economies and the strong presence of Japanese companies in the region. While chronic ailments such as deflation and a runaway fiscal deficit continue to occupy the minds of Japanese policy makers, the country's economy has grown at an unexpectedly robust pace in recent quarters, thanks primarily to soaring exports to China, Vietnam, India and other nations. Asia’s economic and exporting growth affects many countries. Asia is constantly sending items to the United States and other countries. However, these countries’ economies are not as strong as they once were. So in return, these countries can not afford all of the items that Asia has been sending since their own personal recovery. Not much success can be a result of their growth, but it will be hard to catch up to Asia's progress
Google-News : Asia Powers Japans Growth Spurt
ReplyDeleteSummary-Japan is profiting and is growing helping the global economic recovery. Its ties to asia's fast growing economies and companies they have in that region. There economy has grown also because of their exports to China ,Vietnam,Indiaa, and other nations around the world. There first quarter growth was more than the U.S. and European Union.
Significance- This affects asia in alot of ways, First, it willl lead japan out of economic trouble so that would be one less country out of debt. Also, Japan wants to join forces with other companies that are local and thar are all over asia. They want to see japan and asia grow together. they want that to be because they want asia to be a sustainable nation. Clinton Embarks on Three-Nation Tour of Asia
http://www1.voanews.com/english/news/asia/Clinton-Embarks-on-3-Nation-Tour-of-Asia-94464409.html
Asia
Summery: Hilary Clinton, U.S. Secretary of State, leaves Washington for a six day trip to East Asia . In East Asia , she must face down a long list of controversial issues. On Friday,
May 21, 2010 , Clinton will land in Tokyo and discuss issues with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada. These two countries have been arguing over the placement of US Marine Airbase on Japan ’s Okinawa . Clinton will then travel to China and will then join high-ranking U.S and Chinese officials in Beijing to talk about economic issues including the criminally low exchange rate for China ’s currency. Accusations have flown as the U.S claims China has been keeping tight control over the yuan, which is said to make China ’s imports cheaper on the global market. Clinton will then leave for South Korea , where tension is still thick due to North Korea ’s sinking of a South Korean warship and the death of 46 sailors.
Significance: Many Americans today are all well up-to-date with the issues in Asia . As Washington and other U.S officials discuss and converse with Asia , we have renewed hope that conflicts can be solved and we can begin to renew a good relationship with all of Asia . Clinton traveling to Asia may also result in people trusting her and getting rid of the doubt that she may well be the demise of our country. Asia and the U.S. have always had a strained relationship and in most people’s view, we need to become more of allies and less of enemies. If the U.S and Asia can work out their differences everyone would be a lot happier and a lot less full of worry.

On Thursday, Hilary Clinton left for East Asia on an almost week long trip. While there she will be dealing with many issues amongst the countries. When she gets to Tokyo, she will be talking about some issues with the Japanese Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister. She will also travel to China to deal with economy problems. After China, Hilary Clinton will then go to South Korea, where tensions are high because of South Korea’s warship sinking and 46 sailors dying.
A lot of Americans are well aware of what is happening in Asia, while others are not. Hopefully, we can help end problems and Asia, and make all the countries at peace. Asia and the United States have always not been friends, but hopefully if we help them fix some issues, we can become allies rather than be enemies. Hilary Clinton can do a good job in Asia, and then it will benefit both countries now and in the future.

A firefighting team in southwest China has been formed. It consists of seven monks and three Buddhists. They want to protect the Jinyun Temple from fires. The building is made of wood architecture, and it is ancient and sacred. The reason they made a whole new team just for one building is because the building is far away from any in local cities.
This article is significant because it shows how important ancient architectures such as these are to the people of China. These structures hold a lot of their history and to lose them would be a major loss to everyone. Taking another step to protect the Jinyun Temple will ensure its safety. Not only is the temple protected because of this firefighting team, it also protects the forest around it, which is vital to a lot of life in China. The seven monks and three Buddhists obviously care a lot for China's history and want to keep it safe.

In Shanghai, China there is free lodging in exchange for speaking English. The lodgers must speak up to two hours of English so that Chinese hosts can learn English for free. In 30 days, 5000 Chinese families have signed up. Also, if you help teach English you can get tours, and Chinese cooking lessons.
This effects the world, because it's helping Chinese people to learn English. If they learn English I think this will help them a lot in the future and also help them do other things in life in America possibly. I also think this is good, because it shows how people are willing to help.

This article says that the cost of oil is going down in Asia. This is good for people who are buying oil. But people are saying oil could go backrupt. The price of oil dropped to almost Us$69 a barrel. Thats very low and many people will lose alot of money.
This is important to the U.S. because we get a small amount of oil from Asia. We will have to pay less and thats good for us. Also other countries get some oil from Asia and thats good for them. So the oil price drop is good for us but not for Asia.
