In Pretoria, South Africa, a luxury train filled with a total of 59 tourists lost control and crashed. As the rail officials noticed breaks not working, they instructed the passengers to jump off and they jumped off. No one jumped though the instructor survived. Everyone on the train including a pregnant women had died. Metrorail stated it would take two days to clean up the debris. Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said the incident shouldnt affect soccer the World Cup in 7 weeks and the thousands of tourists traveling by trains.
The incident in the article effects the world in many ways. First, people from different countries died in the incident. Countries such as The United States, France, Germany, Britian, and South Africa. Also, in several weeks South Africa will be hosting an important event to soccer. The World Cup; and many people will be taking these trains. This incident may raise concerns though the transport official says it shouldn't. So in the following weeks lets hope they take some measures to make sure that traveling by train there is a safe choice for the sake of people from all over the world.

On Wednesday, April 21st, in Pretoria, Africa, a luxury train derailed with 59 passengers aboard the train. Sadly, two lives were lost. One of those lives belonged to a pregnant woman, the baby and the woman both died. The other life was a crew member. Many passengers became trapped and nearly 20 people were injured after the accident. At a routine change in Cape Town, the train began moving before the engine change was complete. The train gathered speed down a slope. The passengers were told to jump off the moving train when the brakes were not working, however some did not. It is estimated that it will take 2 days before all the debris will be cleaned up at the accident scene.
This accident in Africa is a tragedy. Lives were altered because of this event. It is sad to hear that two lives were lost and many more were injured because of this preventable incident. Many people are so grateful for the emergency squad who was able to stop the loss of any more lives in the accident. Hopefully, precautions will be taken to insure that an event like this one will never happen again. For those people who were directly effected by this tragedy, you are in our prayers. I am sure that the world is hoping that a accident like this will never happen again.

Being one of the world's youngest monarchs, King Oyo has just turned 18. He now takes full control of the western part of Uganda. However, being that he is so young, officials have assigned a board of advisors to help him. King Oyo rose to power when his father died in 1995, when he was only three years old. His full name is Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. He rules over 2 million people in the Tooro Kingdom, and yet is still in high school.
This is significant because western Uganda is now under a new rule. Better yet, King Oyo is only 18 years old. For an 18 year old to rule over 2 million people, who are mostly living in poverty, is a lot of responsibility. Hopefully with the help of a board of advisors, King Oyo will be able to make a difference in his kingdom.

Annie Lennox's "HIV Positive" Shirt Explained
(CBS) When it comes to combating HIV/AIDS, singer Annie Lennox knows how to make a statement. But during Wednesday night's "Idol Gives Back," her "HIV Positive" T-shirt had fans questioning as to whether or not she has the disease.
So is the former "Eurthymics" singer really ill?
"I can tell you the good news is actually I am not. However, many people are. In fact, 22 million in sub-saharan Africa are currenly HIV positive," Lennox explained on YouTube. "And I am wearing this in solidarity with them because it's very hard when you are HIV postive to be open about your status and to be able to tell your family and your friends."
Photos: "American Idol" Season 9
Lennox is on a mission to fight the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS, which brings with it "a lot of secrecy and a lot of silence," she added. "What we need to do it to normalize the disease, so it can be just like any other disease."
Had Lennox turned around during her "Idol Gives Back" performance of her new song, "Universal Child," fans' worries would have been wisked away. The back of the T-shirt read, "Fighting HIV/AIDS."
But sadly, not everyone in Africa is so lucky.
Lennox's performance followed footage of a touching story about a 9-year-old girl, Avelile, before and after she received treatment.
Although Lennox wasn't able to attend "Idol Gives Back," due to flight delays from Iceland's volcanic erruption (she appeared via satellite), the Black Eyed Peas, Alicia Keys, Elton John, Carrie Underwood, Joss Stone and Jeff Beck, were among the artists who performed.
In 2007, Lennox founded the SING Campaign. The money raised by SING helps prevent the spread of HIV in South Africa and also supports those currently living with HIV, according to Lennox' official website.
This article really spoke to me. I honestly believe that this shirt was a Great idea for Annie Lennox to do. She got the world’s attention, and with this virus that is exactly what we need to do. People need to be educated on its symptoms and causes and its consequences. People have to stop saying to themselves, “Oh, it can’t happen to me.” Because it most certainly can; this virus can infect anyone who isn’t being careful and safe in having intercourse. This virus can even happen to those who are careful and had sex with someone who either didn’t know they were infected, or neglected to their partner that they were in fact infected. So what Ms. Lennox did was get people to pat attention, make them see that this can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. She wanted to sent a message to all people that you have to be safe, smart and sanitary.

ReplyDeleteKidnapped aid workers released in Congo
By the CNN Wire Staff

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/africa/04/16/congo.aid.workers/index.html
On April 9th, eight members of the International Committee of the Red Cross were kidnapped in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). However this past Friday, April 16, they were released. The eight kidnapped included seven Congolese and one Swiss national. The group was held by an armed group in Congo after assessing the needs of displaced citizens in Kivu province of the DRC. The eight members all returned in good health and the Red Cross assures they will continue their mission in helping civilians that were forced from their homes. The violence due to ethnic clashes in South Kivu is what’s forcing the people out of their homes.
This article does not only have an effect on Africa and on the Red Cross but on the whole world as well. The Red Cross is an international group with volunteers from all over the world. The people who are members of the Red Cross will be alarmed by the actions in Kivu. Not many people are willing to put their life at risk as a volunteer in another country. The actions demonstrated by the armed forces in Kivu are frightening and will chase people away from visiting or helping people in Kivu. The government in Kivu needs to ensure the safety of the volunteers or inform them of the risks.

One of the last remaning kings in Ugandan turned 18, being one of the youngest reigning monarchs. In 1995 the kings father died and he took the thorne at the age of 3. Untill the king became 18 he had a board of advisers to help him make decisions. He now takes full control of the western part of Ugandan. He also has about two million subjects under his rule.
This event is significant because the king becoming an adult can make or break Ugandan. He is very young but seems to have great qualties as a leader. He also has his board of advisers to help him, as well as his mother. The king has plans to improve education and is belived to do well. Everyone has faith in there king to do a good job and improve his country in any way possible.

A man from West Sfrica boarded a New York-bound flight in Senegal and was added to the no-fly list while the plane was already heading over the Alantic Ocean, according to a passenger and two other sources knowledgable of th situation. The flight was delayed because the pilot found out there was someone on the plane on the no-fly list. The an who was on the no-fly list had already been on the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment list, which is coompromised of more than 500,000 people with limited ties to terrorist. Investigation with authorities is still going on to see if the man is a threat or not.
This event is significant because it tells about a person who was believed to be a terrorist. The man was arrested and nvestigation is still going on to see if he posed a threat.

The United Nations children’s agency says sixteen countries in West and Central Africa are experiencing the measles this year. UNICEF said on Thursday that out of the 22,000 cases of measles,185 people have died. The agency says it is 16 million short in the money needed for immunizations.UNICEF says most countries in West and Central Africa have immunized less than 80% of their population. In West Africa, more than 400 people died of measles last year.
The significance is that the measles is one of the most infectious diseases that exist today. If we can stop the disease in the US, then we can stop the disease in Africa. We can donate money to the immunization campaign in Africa.

Article: "Peacekeepers held in Darfur to be freed after poll result: captor"
Publication Date: April,20.2010
Author: yahoo.com
Region:Africa
In the article, “Peacekeepers held in Darfur to be freed after poll result: capture” tells the readers like me that in Darfur peacekeepers were captured. Now the two men and two women, who were from the Un-African union mission, will now be let out after the election results are out. The kidnapping was brought up during the first competitive election in Sudan. The reasons the kidnappers captured the peacekeepers was to make sure that there isn’t any trouble before they let them out. The peacekeepers are in good health and haven’t been harmed. These people have been captured since April 11, now on April 20 they are said to be set free. Since 2003 Darfur has been facing several kidnappings, and other criminal acts, there is no telling what will happen next.
The significance of this article is since 2003 Darfur has been facing acts of crime and it hasn’t stopped. Around the world people are hearing about, “peacekeepers” being captured if this article is right that means that no matter how kind you are people will always be out to get you. Dafur needs help and this is only one of the reasons why America needs to send out troops.

US Indicts 11 Alleged Pirates from Somalia
This article discussed the eleven Somali pirates that have been indicted in the United States. The Somali pirates have been suspected of the recent attacks on two U.S. Navy ships off the coast of Africa. The capture of the Somali pirates came after the group of five pirates that were indicted in connection with a firefight on March 31 between the USS Nicholas and their ship in the Indian Ocean. There was also another six pirates charged with an alleged attack on the USS Ashland in the Gulf of Aden near Djibouti on March 31. The pirates can face life in prison for their crimes if convicted. Pirates are usually tried in Kenya, but Kenyan authorities are in need of more international funding. Also, piracy off of the African eastern coast has become more rampant in recent months, showing that more and different steps need to be taken to prevent piracy. Admiral Mark Fitzgerald, the commander of the US Naval Forces in Europe and Africa has suggested other approaches to stopping the pirates. He believes that you have to go after their logistics supplies, their middlemen. Also, he believes it is going to take greater and better intelligence capabilities.
The information in this article affects the United States and the rest of the world in that the pirates are attacking U.S. ships and can attack other ships from other countries as well. This article states that there are many pirates who have been indicted just recently because of attacking various ships. This can cause conflict between the other countries in the world and the African pirates, which can result in possible deaths of people of other countries, as well as the United States. Also, if pirates are attacking and taking goods off of American ships this can also affect our economy, as it can affect the economy of other countries. There needs to be different and better approaches to stopping or preventing piracy, or it may happen more, and by even more countries.

One of the few kings left in Uganda has just turned 18. His father had died when he was just a toddler so he became King at a very young age. Since he was so little when he took the throne, there was a board of advisors appointed to help make decisions. He has control of over 2 million people in the West part of Uganda. King Oyo has a very important responsiblity.
This event is significant in a few ways. King Oyo has just turned 18, so now he will have complete rule of Western Uganda, which could turn out good or bad. It will be a huge responsible for him since he's a young person having to take rule over 2 million people, and those people are mostly poor. He has also planned to improve the education for the kingdom. All the people have faith in him, and hopefully he will do a good job being King.

http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-04-25/south-africa-s-zuma-says-he-tested-negative-for-hiv-update1-.html
South African President, Jacob Zuma, tested himself for HIV and it resulted in a negative response. About 11 precent of South Africa which is close to 49 milion poeple, carry the HIV virus that can lead to AIDS. Zuma has three wives and twenty children. He is being criticized for fathering his own children and trying to fight against AIDS. In 2006, he was convicted of raping an HIV- positive friend who was half his age. The campaign is expecting to test 15 million people by the end of June in 2011.
This event is significant in several ways. The south africans are more aware of teh spreading of the HIV virus and should all be tested. Many refuse but its for the better to test. South Africas AIDS program will increase their spending to more than twice the amoutn of people recieving medical treatmeant in the next three years.

South Africa's Zuma said He Tested
President Jacob Zuma admitted that he got tested after fathering a child. He decided to share his results with HIV/AIDS campaign. The campaign is seeking to test 15 million people. Since he has 3 wives and 20 children people say that he is setting a bad example for fighting AIDS.11 percent of South Africas 49 million people are infected with HIV. Zuma was also tried for having raped a HIV-positive person. He even said he had sex without a condom.
This is significant because this is how HIV/AIDS is spread when people don't think about what they are doing. Also it increases the danger of you getting the virus if you live in Africa. So more people have to get tested.

"Mass illness' hits Afghan schoolgirls in Kunduz"
The article is about school girls in Afghanistan. They were reported ill from symptoms like nausea and dizziness. They claimed to have noticed a strange smell in the classroom. It appears to be gas but has still been unidentified.
This article has significance because young women have been targeted in the Middle-East in previous years. Also, there is an increase in attacks on girls. Officials suspect it was deliberate poisoning. The article shows us that there is a lot of terrorism in the Middle-East.

At Lilongwe, Malawi at a Chiseka school in Africa, there are 1,531 kids, 6 classrooms, no light bulbs, or running water. Yet, their doing well enough for 40 students in 8th grade to pass exams. It is important to save education for the ones that are growing up without one. Malawi has a 10 year education plan, and teach kids math, how to manage a basic job, and writing checks.
This is very important in Africa to have education. Some kids there, probably expect to have no education at all and that's it. This will also help kids know what to do with their lives better, and help them know more about what's around them. This also effects Africa, if there's good education now there might be more in the future.

In Southern Darfur Yesterday at 10:48 p.m dozens of people are killed when Sudan army clashes with Arab armed tribe. Four tribesmen were killed in Dayeen District. The fighting was a part of a violent outbreak on Saturday. Ashorooq States that about 54 were killed and dozens were wounded.Suleiman Isaq, the secretary general of the SPLA states that clash broadened from reappearing fights between the SPLA and the Tribes.
This is not good for africa to have constant fighting. Isaq expressed to Ashorooq that SPLA officials are making progress with local government to contain the violence. The Darfur Genocide is not helping Africa's reputation. More fighting and killing people wont help only hurt.Hopefully the SPLA officals and the local government get the violence enclosed

After years of fear and denial of Aids sweeping the nation they are finally trying harder to reduce it. There are just way too many people dying from AIDS in South Africa. They are giving people protection to protect agiast the virus. This will help dramtically.
These article affects the world very much. It tells other countries that if we dont protect agiants Aids or other Stds we could be drastically affected. It shows us to be more careful in what we do. This article is very effective.

Summary: Somalia pirates plead not guilty to the charges of attacks on two Navy ships off the coast of Africa. As U.S. Magistrate F. Bradford Stillman in Norfolk orders the eleven pirates to remain detained on the charges, he allows them time to talk with their attorneys (with the help of interpreters). The pirates are charged with accounts of piracy, attacks to loot a craft, assault with a perilous weapon, and other weapons counts. While piracy demands a life sentence, the other counts range from 10-35 years. Of the eleven pirates, five were caught on March 31 when USS Nicholas exchanged fire with the pirate vessel just west of Seychelles. The remaining six, after they began to shoot the USS Ashland on April 10, were captured. As a result of the firings, two of the eleven pirates were visibly injured. Since witnesses and videos place the young Somali teenagers (who were chewing khat and armed with AK47s and RPGs) and conducting acts of piracy, many believe that it will not be especially difficult to prosecute. Many are arguing about the type of trial the pirates should receive. Some believe that the Navy was victimized and that the pirates should face a criminal trial in a U.S. courtroom, however, the Somali mission to the U.N. claims they should be put through a regional or international tribune that does not take place in a U.S. courtroom.
Significance: In the world we live in today, one with many problems, a person rarely feels that pirates can be an issue. However, as money problems escalate in the world, it is no wonder why people are reverting back to old, yet effective, means of getting money and supplies. Pillaging and pirating anything is a crime in most of the world, yet we rarely read about it, or see it on the news. Lately, there has been an increase in pirating. Pirating, especially when it is done to a U.S. ship, can cause major conflicts everywhere. As an example, the eleven pirates in the article attached were a source of extreme conflict between the US and Somalia. Pirating can also cause a decrease in supplies, depending on how much the pirates can get, and will further hurt our already declining economy. Pirating isn’t something that pouts fear in our hearts or a chatter in our teeth but… maybe it should.

June 4th in South Africa, picked by bookmakers to be the first soccer World Cup host not to advance to the knockout round, is on an 11-match unbeaten run going into the event. The team, known as Bafana Bafana, or ‘Our Boys’, will play Denmark tomorrow in its final tune-up before the world’s most- watched sporting event kicks off next week. South Africa on May 31 routed Guatemala 5-0, its biggest- ever victory. That’s helped convince the nation it may overcome a poor World Cup record and decades of underinvestment in the sport. The country wasn’t able to compete internationally during the apartheid era. “They are the best outsider in the World Cup, no doubt,” former coach Clive Barker said in an interview. “They have had good preparations for the tournament and certainly will be hugely competitive,” said Barker, who trained the team to clinch the 1996 African Cup and reach the No. 16 ranking.Africa’s first country to host the World Cup is ranked 83rd in the world by FIFA, soccer’s governing body. Only North Korea, at 105th, is at the tournament with a lower rating. “We’re doing well now,” Sam Fredericks, a 27-year-old IT worker draped in his national flag, said after watching South Africa beat Colombia. “But these teams aren’t playing in the World Cup. It’ll be a different caliber.”
