William Burns, the Under Secretary for Political Affairs, went to Damascus, Syria to share Barack Obama's plan. Barack Obama wants to work up to a better relationship with the Middle Eastern country, Syria. William Burns stated that he has talked to President Assad, who is the president of Syria. Burns said they talked about what they disagree upon but also about what they agree upon. The United States plans to help create a sense of peace between Arabs and Isrealis. The U.S government has announced that Robert Ford will be the American Ambassador to Syria when and if he is confirmed to the Senate. It has been five years since a U.S Ambassador has been in Syria and this shows the United States is ready to help and make a difference. William Burns closed by saying he is hopeful that progress will be made for the well being of both countries.

The fact that the United States is making an effort to make a difference in Syria is very significant. This event will affect many people. It will affect not only the people of Syria but also the people of the United States. If the United States is able to make the progress that they want to it is very possible that peace between Arabs and Israelis will be created. This will directly affect the Arabs and Israelis making their lives better and overall safer. It is important for the United States to continue to reach out to Middle Eastern countries and create better relationships between them. Hopefully, the United States relationship with Syria will become stronger as we make this significant effort to make the bond better between these two countries.

Africa remains a facinating country that managed to avoid a bloddy civil war through an extraordinary reconciliation process. People of different colors who setteled the land share buses, beaches and swimming pools. Three decades ago, policemen could enter homes and arrest people in the middle of the night who were different races and were found in bed together. Police could also take away children who were light skinned from a black mother fathered by a white father.South Africa is trying to find a cure for cancer. Today the rate is 1 in 4, around the world cancer affects 1 in 3, by 2020 1 in 2 will have developed the disease.

This article is significant because three decades ago people in Africa could not be with a certain race. Now people in Africa and around the world can be with who they want. Also South Africa is trying to find a cure for cancer. They are hoping to find a cure so children can produce healthy offspring when older. If a cure is found for the awful disease of cancer there is a better chance of future generations living a healthier life.

    Link: http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/767462--hamas-releases-22-fatah-prisoners-in-goodwill-gesture

Despite what seems like endless conflict in the Middle East, some countries are taking small steps towards peace. Twenty-two Fatah movement prisoners were released by the Gaza strip's Hamas rulers. Though the two groups are not friendly, the release of the prisoners was out of goodwill and was in hopes of building more trust between the two groups. The two groups have been rivals since 2007, when relationships were destoryed after Hamas took Gaza by force. While the groups do not agree on even why the prisoners were arrested, steps towards trust have been made.

The release of twenty-two prisoners may seem like a small thing in a country where death is ever-present. But, all prior steps towards peace have been backwards and this gesture may foreshadow a new mindset in the Middle East. Though it may be a fantasy, visions of peace can be seen on the horizon of this mindset continues.

Elton John, who is homosexual and previously a cocaine addict, was interviewed on the topic of homosexuality. He believes that Jesus, who is the messiah of Christianity, was homosexual, and wanted love and peace for everyone in the world. Gay rights in the Middle East was also brought up. Elton John goes on to say that if you are a gay woman living in the Middle East, you are "as good as dead." Currently, he is married to David Furnish. Since he has come off of his cocaine addiction, he has been donating and helping the world as best as he can. He founded The Elton John AIDS Foundation, which tries to prevent the spread of AIDS.

Elton John speaks out in this article in relation to independence and freedom. He believes that everyone should be free to be homosexual if they want to, no matter where they live. In the Middle East, this is not accepted as much as it is in the United States. Elton John also mentions Jesus, who is the messiah in Christianity. He wants to spread the love that Jesus was trying to spread in the midst of all of the hatred in our world.

The Hamas has always had bad blood between other gruops. One of thier members was found dead in a hotel room. The brother of the deceased agent told the authorities that the ones who commited the murder were just ignored like nothing happened. Earlier a couple weeks back, the to suspected murderers were arrested in jordan. Which added even more gas to the fire that was igniting. Then a Palistinian spokesmen said that the claims of the hamas were false, he even said that they had a hand in the killing of their own.

The significance of this article is that some people might believe that the authorites are being bias against the hamas. The Hamas have already had a lot of bad blood between the others and now when one of their own gets killed, some people think they committed the crime. All this is going to do is stirr up more anger and hatred between the hamas and other factions. But not entirely, the body of the deceaesed was realesed to the Hamas nine days after his death and he had a funeral. But overall this shows that the bad blood won't end soon.

In the article that I read, titled, Elton John Says Jesus Was a Super- Intelligent Gay Man was actually interesting. John states that if there was a gay woman in the Middle East, that she is “as good as dead.” I researched it further and found out that homosexually is highly frowned upon in that part of the world. I was shocked when I was reading it. I learned that is against their religion, almost an act of the “devil”. As if homosexuality, was a sign that the person is a “devil” worshiper. At first, I was really offended, because more than, probably 60% of my friends are gay or lesbian. Then, I realized that it’s not as if these people are killing everyone who is of a different sexual preference; it is just what these people believe in and I can’t chance their views. They have been this way for centuries, thy have their beliefs and they have to be respected. Although, I do not agree with their opinions on homosexuality, I am able to keep an open mind about their cultures.
The significance of this article is that the one thing that both the Middle Eastern countries can agree on is that fact that they both deeply frown upon homosexuality. They all think it is an act if the “devil”.

Scientists have recently discovered a way to make vaccines without using refrigeration, or another cooling system. The news was announced, on February 18th. They accomplished this by using two types of sugar, mixed in the vaccine. The research was funded by Bill and Melinda Gates. Researchers from the university of Nova Bio-Pharma Technologies discovered this. Making these vaccines are very cheap and will vaccinate many people in the world. Scientists are still developing this on other vaccinations, yet it is said to be improved and commonly used within the next 5 years.

The significance of this article is that many people across the globe need vaccines, but keeping them at the right temperature makes things difficult. Another reason is that this is a simple, cheap, and efficient way of vaccinating people in tough situations. For example, the article states that children in rural Africa will benefit from this. Also, the GAVI Alliance welcomed this idea into 72 of the poorest countries. Having vaccines being so easy to take care of will increase the rate of immunization all over.

In Peshawar, Pakistan a car bomb exploded in a market killing over 100 people. Many were women and children. This bomb destroyed many stores and buildings and caused a mass burning of debris and dead bodies. This proved to people that their government and security is not doing a good job at keeping the civilians safe. Because of the bomb is was thought as a threat to Taliban militants. They went ahead and marched into a house killing 11 people, one american and the rest U.N staff.

This article shows all us Americans that we need to be careful and be aware of whats happening around the world because they could come in any moment and threaten us with bombs and violence. This affects the United States because one of our own people were involved and was killed. We need better protection outside of our country as well as bordering our country. This not only effects the US but also the neighboring countries as well. We need to keep our eyes out for suspicious behavior and make sure we have the best protection for our country that we can have.

Almost exactly 30 years after the taking of the U.S. Embassay in Tehran, Iran, President Obama has stated that he wants to build the missing relationship we have with Iran. Internationally speaking, America and other countries have all recognized Iran's ability and right to wield nuclear power. The Iranians want to connect with the world and are eager for a new future. Lately Iran has been one of the bad guys and now they have showed a change of heart that drives them toward peace and friendly relationships with other nations. With guidance in all aspects, the United States and other countries have promised their support for Iran.

There is no single most important objective to be reached with a friendly Iran, but rather many important objectives to strive for. To reach a respuctful relationship with Iran will undoubtedly take time. Time that will be filled with frustration and dead ends. The same goes with allowing Iran to be fully responsible for its so longly doubted peaceful nuclear energy. In the end we will eventually build a solid future with Iran that is based upon cooperation, respect, and responsibility.

  12. Middle East: Fatah, Hamas trade accusations as region reels from Hamas assassination
    February 17, 2010

    Brian Kilpatrick Block 4

In Dubai a leading Hamas figure had been assassinated last month. It appears that he was strangled. The person who was assassinated was Mahmoud Mabhouh. He is believed to be a weapons procurer. The people accused of the assassination are believed to be Mossad agents. They are thought to be European nationals living in Israel. This makes the authorities in Dubai think that Israeli clandestine services were involved in the assassination. This assassination has caused concern since Hamas and the United Arab Emirates, which includes the city-state of Dubai, have a history of bad relations. This assassination has created involvement of other countries. Qatar had to get involved before the United Arab Emirates would release the body of Mahmoud Mabhouh. The blame for this assassination has also been put on Hamas for failing to protect Mahmoud Mabhouh. Israel is being accused by Mahmoud al-Zahar, a Hamas official, for opening the door to Hamas attacks.

The significance of this event is that other Middle East countries are getting involved in this event. Since it was a leading Hamas figure that was assassinated, this will probably be looked into by Hamas very carefully. It is possible that Hamas may want to retaliate for the death of a leading figure. If retaliation, occurs than more problems may take place and others being killed. Other countries are making unsettling comments which may have the potential for stirring up further conflicts in these countries. This can also cause a problem for the United States and other countries which may intervene to stop the possible problems which may arise from the incident.

The United States has now made a long term commitment to help rebuild Afghanistan from previous wars. They are hoping to rebuild and get back everything that was lost within the many wars that took place in Afghanistan. In the mantime, The United States and its international citizens remain helping for a country that is stable and economically sucessful. The United States also supports the Afganistan Goverment in efforts to establish a framework for the civil society. One that emphasizes the democratic principals through the rules of law and transparent forms of govermenting.

The international community is currently providing resources and experise in a variety of areas in Afghanistan including the humanitarian assistance and relief, security needs and infrastructure projects and research. The Afghanistan Government commmited the protection for the womans rights and religious tolerance. They decided that giving woman rights and religious tolerance would solve many problems within different groups of Afghanistan.

Obama has decided to place an ambassador in Syria even after claims of Syria being involved with terrorism. The US was involved 5 years ago with Syria until the assassination of the Lebanese Prime Minister. This placement of a new ambassador is part of Obama's policy of engagement. It is said that placing the ambassador is an act to ramp up US political offensive against terror. Many past presidents have placed ambassador's in different middle eastern countries to discuss oil or other topics. This foreign engagement is seen by the Middle Easterners as a way to get closer to terror in Iraq rather than actually promote peace in Syria.

This is important to the US for many reasons. First, it shows us that the our leaders integrity can be questionable at times when we send someone to a country we have no real interest in to get closer to a country we do. Another point it brings up is that, If Syria was accused of being involved in terrorist activity why put someone in direct danger when we could just keep them home. Personally, i don't think beating around a political bush is necessary in our war on terror. If we want something done we need to engage it directly not from completely different countries.

Title of article: Duke Lacrosse accuser charged with attempted murder, arson

Source: WRAL.com, Stacy Davis &Erin Hartness

    Publication date: 2/ 18/ 10

On the night of March 13, 2006 a women by the name of Crystal Mangum worked as an exotic dancer at a party hosted by the duke lacrosse players. Mangum accused three of the Duke Lacrosse players of sexually assaulting her and raping her at the party, she truly believed she was going to die. After weeks of investigating police and detectives say, “It never happened” and, “It was a pathetic way to stay in the public eye” About four years later Cyrstal Magnum somehow got into the public eye again. Not too long ago at night time around 11:30 there was a distress call by one of Mangum’s three children. When the police came to the house they found Crystal and her 33 year old boyfriend named Milton Walker fighting and threatening one another. Police say when they arrived at the house none of Crystal’s children were harmed but Crystal was scratching, and punching Milton. She threatened Milton and then when a police officer tried to take her away she resisted and yelled to Milton, “I’m going to stab you”. Authorities also say Crystal burned all of Milton’s clothes in the bathtub, thankfully firemen arrived and no one was harmed. Crystal is now charged with five counts of arson, assault and battery, three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, attempted first-degree murder, identity theft, communicating threats and resisting a police officer.

This article is significant because a person like Crystal Mangum has obviously gotten away with criminal activity up to this point. She has not only affected the lives of the Duke University lacrosse team but she also created racial tension around the U.S. which cause people to take sides. This just shows the public that if people like Crystal get away with crime they will continue to cause more problems.

Middle East: Fatah, Hamas trade accusations as region reels from Hamas Assassination

Someone was assassinated last month. Hamas is accussing Duabi for this problem. They heard it was also some people from Fatah that lived in Dubai. Hamas said that they were not suprised that dubai had some people arrested. Some people though blame Hamas authorities for such an attack on an innocent man. So the main point is that the assassinations accured unexpectadly.

This article is significant because the argument was very strong and locals were blaming the authorities and were wondering if they were next. They shouldn't have blamed them because the authorities can't be everywhere and know everything. This conflict was spreading so much that the United Arab Emirates were almost involved and Hamas did not want any other countries involved.

Mahmoud Mabhouh was found killed in a hotel on Feburary 17th. They have many suspects for the murder. They cannot be sure without full proof. But they do think that Israeli clandestine services might have committed the murder. This is causing much tention and bad blood in the middle east. The murderer must be found out soon or it will get very bad in the middle east.

This event is very significant in the Middle East. It is because it is raising tentions all over the middle east. People are concerned for their saftey and if it gets worse fights will break out. This also affects other people like the U.S. It Does because we might have to get involved if this gets worse. One bad thing happening could effect people all over the world.

As President Obama was sworn into office, he vowed to "reach out and engage" with the internationl community. Though, Iran refusing to give back, has announced a twenty percent increase in uranium production. With the failed attempt of engaging Iran, The Obama Administration decided to connect with other countries. Hoping for aid in putting pressure on Iran to decrease the nuclear production. Though, the chances of this plan working are low. The Obama Administration knows that something will have to be done about Iran's pursuit for nuclear weapons.

This article is significant because it is important that we are getting in an arguement with a country that is making nuclear weapons. Without their cooperation our lives could be threated. And if they a country it could start another world war. Which could lead to numerous problems, from money expenditures to many s.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary CLinton gets a strong reponse after commenting on the Iran and the Islammic State as becoming a military dictatorship. Minister Manouchehr Mottaki begins by accusing the U.S of pursuing wrong policies in the Middle East. The Minister goes on saying the U.S is also involved in such thing and has a wrong attitude toward the issues in the Middle East. Hillary Clinton believes that the issue should be targeted in U.N. sanctions. Along with the hit against Hillary Clinton come an apology for trying to divert public opinion in the region toward unreal and untruthful matters. While speaking in Qatar, Clinton assured Iran the U.S. was not planning to attack Iran but to make sure the new nuclear weapon is not going to be a problem. The U.S. wants documents confirming the nuclear program will be used solely to generate electricity so Iran can send out more of its oil and gas.

This event is significant because a large conflict with Iran can lead to military action. This event does not affect other countries other than the U.S. and Iran at the moment. However, in the future if Iran does obtain nuclear weapons many countries will be affectd. Iran will be a threat to most countries around thhe world and especially their enemies. If the U.S. becomes and enemy we could be in real danger. The U.S. effort could be positive if the UN agrees with them but will be negative if they do not. The U.S. is also immediately affected just because they are involved in the situation.

    MIDDLE EAST: Fatah, Hamas trade

Mahmoud Mabhouh was found dead in his hotel room on Feburary 17th. They have some suppose murderers but they are not completely positive without any proof. The government is trying they’re best to keep the peace in the Middle East but if they don’t find out who killed Mahmound it will go bad very quickly.

The Middle East has enough problems without people killing others. So the tentions are high and if another bad thing goes wrong violent wars could occur. The U.S. is already involved with everything around them and there’s not much more we could do for everyone and everything.

Study Shows diversity of African Genes

Scientists have recently studied the DNA of South Africans and uncovered something new about the ancestry of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. What they found is that any two bushmen in their study that speak different languages are more genetically differently than a European compared to an Asian. Stephan Schuster of Pennsylvania State Univtersity says that, "to understand human diversity we need to go to Southern Africa and study those people." Humans also have evolved around 200,000 years ago there and lived there the longest so it's not very hard to believe.

The diversity of African genes is significant because it's important to find out your genes and it also helps scientists. Scientists have found out that 1.3 million variations of DNA had never been looked at. So that opens of the chances of genes having a disease or a response to a medication. This is also significant because it really shows how different everyone is.

As the War on Terror and the Arab-Israeli Conflict continue, the violence is only gettting worse. Recently (no date verified) a Red Cross convoy was hit by a roadside explosion on the Gaza strip. Though nobody was hurt, the gorvernment took initiative and provided more security to prevent future occurances like this.

The significance of this event gave the Government a heads up that Gaza isn't protected as well as it should be. Also, the fact that organizations like the Red Cross are there to promote peace and the violence still continues gets countries such as the U.S. angry. Thus sending more troops to leave home once again and protect the innocent people over ing the middle east that want nothing to do with the violence. The war itself has gotten multiple countries invlolved and it seems like there is still little improvement made.

In president Obama's inaugural address he vowed to reach out engage with the international community , along with those hostile to the united states. Obama's engagment with Iran has been a failure. iran has failed to reciporate. Then Iran said they will "increase its enrichment capacity and produce twenty percent more uranium." The Obama administration is now moving ahead on the sanctions front. They are trying to get Iran to stop producing nuclear weapons.

The significance of this is to let the goverment know Iran is going to be difficult to work with. Also that iran will keep up with their production of nuclear weapons. Causing us to have to send more troops over there. This will cause us to stay in war with Iran and keep getting involved with other countries also.

Peace for the Israelis has been a goal for many years. It has been a goal since the founding of the state in 1948. The jewish community says Jerusalem means "city of peace". They have been looking for any compromise that may help them gain peace, even if it means separating Israel into two states. These suggestions for peace have been supported by America, and our last three presidents (Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama). Yet still, some think this will keep going on for generations without any solutions. Some even see the thought of peace in Israel as "unrealistic".

This article was singnificant to the Middle East, because this has been affecting the people of the Middle East in Israel for years. It also affects the people in the United States, because we have been supporting Israel and their ideas of peace.

On Monday February 22, 8 members of the Shiite family were brutally murdered far south of Baghdad. In that same day there were attacks in Irag and it left 23 dead. "Authorities provided no further details about how many were shot, how many beheaded and provided little other information about what they described as an 'ugly crime.'"(AP). Attacks keep going on and innocents keep dying.

A family died, horribly, and yet the attacks are still going on. Hundreds of people are dying a day and we say we are "doing everything we can", if we are, then why is there people STILL dying? This issue is affecting the Middle East immensely. The attacks are making other countries mad, and that makes them involved and then more and more people are dying. It's just not fair. The attacks need to stop.

  29. A mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan, was bombed, killing at least 30 and wounding 70. In a meeting of militants. Among whom were killed was Azam Khan, who was a local militant commander and ran the local FM radio station. It is not known what the cause of the blast was, although it is believed that it was either an accident or the result of fighting militants. Some of the people killed in the incident were associated with Taliban commander Maulvi Noor Jamal. The mosque was being used by the militants as their headquarters to make suicide vests and roadside bombs when one of the vests exploded, killing many in the mosque and the surrounding marketplace.
This article is significant because it shows how poorly fatal weapons are handled in these Middle Eastern countries. We hear about these kinds of bombings often, and it could happen anywhere. Although we do not see this kind of violence as much in the United States, it happens all too often in the Middle East because of their weapons are abused significantly.

The geneticists of today have insisted that the small modern dog has evolved from the grey wolves from almost 4,000 years ago. Small dogs carry a version of the same gene that grey wolves carry. It was said to be that they proposed the smaller body size evolved only once. All over the world they searched for small dogs to see if there wasn’t a gene of a grey wolf but there was not one.

The significance of this was to let people know how even the smallest thing can actually make a difference, even if it is a small dog that has a wolf’s genes its still pretty powerful. Just like the war in Iraq if you kill one person it CAN make a difference to the people that live there. So then others might be scared even to go out of there homes.
